So you want to own a horse, thats great ! but first you need to know how big of a responsibility you are taking on. Many people think that horse ownership is nothing more than having a horse and putting it out to pasture with occasional attention. How very sadly mistaken they are. Let's get into some details here, horses can cost upward of $800 to $1500 per year in upkeep alone per horse, these expenses cover only the things like hay, grain, bedding, shoeing, trimming, immunizations, worming and dental work, this figure does not include things like emergency veterinary care, tack and equipment, or other things which may arise. Plus if you don't have your own land to keep the horse on, you get the additional expense of boarding fees. Now lets throw in riding lessons, show fees, and other needed expenses. So as you can plainly see the numbers can and constantly do change. Horse ownership is hard work, no matter what your plans may be or how the weather is, you will still have the horse to care for, once you take on horse ownership you take on responcibility for that animals life. Hows your horse experience? will you need riding lessons? Will you have the time to properly care for the horse or will you need to hire someone to care for it? Many times when a horse gets sick it is a sudden thing and no matter what time of the day or night it is you must be willing to commit yourself to the care and expenses of equine ownership, no matter if your on the way to a meeting, the beach or whatever, they can and eventually do disrupt your life in many ways. So before you go out and invest in the horse of your dreams, take into consideration the care and upkeep of these magnificent animals will be in your hands for many years, and their life will depend on you.
